RPI ENGINEERING AMBASSADORS PROGRAM – FRIDAY!

Rescheduled due to snow in November, Friday (Dec. 6) is the day! Algonquin is once again proud to host RPI student “Engineering Ambassadors.” On this day students in Grades 6-8 will experience hands-on STEM activities during science classes focused on real world problems and potential solutions, led by RPI students. Grade 8 students will also participate in a panel presentation on college planning and college life during Access.

COLLEGE AND POST-SECONDARY THEME DAY – FRIDAY!

Also rescheduled to coincide with the RPI Ambassadors visit, AMS will be celebrating a “Post-Secondary Theme Day” on Friday! Students are encouraged to wear college, military service or post-secondary training gear as part of this theme day. Also on this day teachers will take a moment with each of their classes to talk about some aspect of their post-secondary training, military and/or college experience with students. Finally, please use this as an opportunity to have a discussion with your child about their thinking and potential plans beyond high school graduation.

TECHVALLEY HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS

Grade 8 Families: Applications for TechValley High School are available in the Counseling Center. All interested families must attend one of TechValley’s information sessions. Please have your child pick up a packet in the Counseling Center.
Also, on Monday, December 9, a representative from Tech Valley High School will be here at AMS to meet with interested students during Grade 8 Access in CLC1. This session does not replace the mandatory information session that students need to attend with a parent/guardian. Rather this is an informal opportunity to learn more about the TechValley program.

COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK

The week of December 9 is Computer Science Education Week. To celebrate, Algonquin will be teaming up with Tech Valley High School to provide fun coding activities using a device called Makey Makey during lunches. Students who would like to join in should bring their Chromebook to lunch. More information will also be available during the Warrior Way assemblies and on the school news.
Coding Club will meet on Tuesday, December 10 after school. Students need to sign up in the library to be able to stay after for Coding Club.
If you have questions please email Rebecca Ekstrom or Dave Hansen.

SPELLING BEE SIGN UP

The annual AMS Spelling Bee will take place on Wednesday, December 11, at 12:55 p.m. Participating students will miss their period H and I classes and will need to make arrangements with their teachers to catch up on missing work. Sign ups are going on now in ELA classes.

AMAZON SMILE

Consider using smile.amazon.com when purchasing through Amazon. Algonquin Parent Organization can be set as your selected charity (your login information will be the same as amazon.com). It is simple to set-up and you can save it right to your account!

TOYS FOR TOTS COLLECTION

The AMS Student Council will hold its Toys for Tots Drive when students return to classes on Wednesday, December 4. If you are out doing holiday shopping, please consider purchasing an item to donate.

NEW SCHOOL NURSE

This week Algonquin welcomes our new school nurse, Ms. Megan Coonradt, to the Health Office. Ms. Coonradt comes to AMS with an extensive background working in hospital, office and instructional settings. Watch for a news post about Ms. Coonradt on the AMS website soon. Please join us in welcoming Ms. Coonradt.

STUDENT COUNCIL HOLIDAY STORE

Next week the AMS Student Council will once again be organizing their “Holiday Store” outside of the cafeteria. The holiday store is essentially a flea market of donated gently used items from staff and community members. All items are priced at garage sale prices. Students are able to shop during their lunches for items that they can give as holiday presents to members of their families. This event was a huge success last year raising hundreds of dollars to purchase gift cards for AMS families in need during the holiday season, so that every student has a happy holiday. Thank you for your support of this great initiative.

APCSD FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM

Help support the APCSD Food Pantry program. Collection to begin November 4 and run through December 3.
