Position Available: Mechanic Assistants
12 month position – 8 hours per day
Must be able to work flexible hours (5:00 am – 5:00 pm)

Salary: Salary in accordance with terms of the CSEA agreement.
Up to $14.89/hr

Qualifications:
• High School diploma or equivalent
• Demonstrate knowledge of general vehicle repair
• Punctual, dependable and cooperative
• Must have good communication skills and work effectively with a team
• Must be in good physical condition and have a willingness to perform routine manual work

ASSISTANT AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is the beginning level of automotive repair and maintenance work. The duties do not include repair jobs involving skilled work except in the capacity of mechanic helper. Assists in the routine work involved in the service and maintenance of automotive equipment. Duties of a less complex nature are performed independently.
An Automotive Mechanic Helper also does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Makes 1,000-mile inspection of grease rack;
Checks and changes tires and repairs flats;
Repairs seats;
Installs video cameras and set camera timers on a rotating basis;
Changes oil and lubricates automotive equipment;
Assists mechanic in the grinding of valves and the fitting of bearings, pistons and
rings;
Assists in the repairing and overhauling of brake systems, differentials,
transmissions and front and rear axels;
Helps adjust steering mechanism and align wheels;
May operate a school bus on assigned route;
Snow removal;
Cleans all areas except maintenance and grounds areas;
Cleans bus bays with power sweeper;
Operate and maintain bus wash system;
Cleans bus area, including pit;
Inspect and maintain overhead lift;
Performs a variety of related tasks.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and the tools and terminology of the trade; willingness to perform mechanical work; working knowledge of general vehicle repair; ability to understand and carry out oral directions; good motor, hand and eye coordination; mechanical aptitude; physical endurance; good communication skills; dependability; good physical condition.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: No minimum qualifications are required, but familiarity with ordinary automotive repair and maintenance practice is desirable. If the position involves the operation of a school bus, however, the candidate must possess a Class II Chauffeur’s License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment and must maintain the license throughout the term of employment.
