  7. Update Regarding Cancellation of...

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are aware of inaccurate reports from local media outlets and want to clear up a few things about class cancellations. Students and staff should report to school on Monday, March 16. Only staff will report on Tuesday, March 17. Classes for students will be canceled from March 18-27. We would also like to share additional information regarding a food service plan, medications, disinfecting of the schools and athletics.

FOOD SERVICE PLAN

Averill Park Central School District will offer meals to all students in need, free of charge, during the closure, beginning on Wednesday, March 18.

Meals will be available for pick up at Algonquin Middle School and Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary School from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Meals will be a cold grab-and-go to be consumed off-site. Drive-thru pick-up stations will be set up outside each building. Please remain in your car and meals will be brought to you.

  • Monday’s pick up will include: Lunch for Monday, Breakfast and Lunch for Tuesday, Breakfast for Wednesday
  • Wednesday’s pick up will include: Lunch for Wednesday, Breakfast and Lunch for Thursday, Breakfast for Friday
  • Friday’s pick up will include: Lunch for Friday, Breakfast for Monday

If you will be picking up meals for a child with dietary restrictions, please contact Colleen Wise at wisec@apcsd.org so we may prepare a meal for you.

If you are unable to pick up meals at either location, please contact your child’s building principal.

MEDICATION

School nurses will be contacting families about their child’s daily medication and will arrange a time for picking the medication up. The nurses are available during the regular school hours Monday and Tuesday. Feel free to contact them if needed.

DISINFECTING DURING CANCELED CLASS TIME

Our building and grounds staff will be using the cancellation of classes to conduct a large-scale disinfecting operation. This will include the emptying and cleaning of all lockers, as well as all hard surfaces in each of our buildings.

ATHLETICS

All practices and any other athletic events have been suspended effective immediately until at least March 30th. The health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Again, all students and staff should report to school on Monday, March 16 so we can better prepare our students for the long-term closure, including but limited to, bringing home belongings such as devices and instruments, assessing device and connectivity needs, and the communication of information from teachers.
