  7. Bus Driver Shortage Information

To address a critical bus driver shortage that is a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Averill Park Central School District is asking familiesTransportationInfo to complete a mandatory 2021-22 Bus Registration Form indicating their needs for the upcoming school year. This form will give the Transportation Department data that will help the District create consolidated, efficient bus routes.

The District hopes that all students will return to in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year, though official guidance from New York State has yet to be released at this time. It is also unknown if students will need to adhere to social distancing rules while riding the bus. Once those guidelines have been put in place, we will communicate any changes being made regarding transportation.

The District is currently working on ways to combat the bus driver shortage.

WHAT THE DISTRICT IS DOING

  • Actively recruiting new drivers
  • Analyzing current and potential bus routes
  • Collecting student bus registration forms

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

  • If you have been driving your child to and from school, please consider continuing this during the upcoming school year.
  • Complete the mandatory registration form.

FAQ

Q: Will all parents receive a registration form?
A: Yes, all parents/guardians will receive a registration form via email. Please fill this form out as soon as possible.

Q: What if my transportation needs change during the school year?
A: Students who do not request transportation at the beginning of the year can change their request whenever needed. We ask that any changes be made as soon as possible to give the transportation department adequate time to complete the request.

Q: Will there be an impact on ride times?
A: A number of bus routes will see an increase in ride time. At this time, we do not know which routes will be impacted as official routes have not been solidified.

Q: Will my child’s bus stop change?
A: We anticipate that bus stops may change in order to create more efficient routes. Pick-up and drop-off locations may change or your child may need to walk to a specific location instead of being picked up or dropped off at your house.

Q: What if I have additional questions?
A: Please email the transportation department here or call 518-674-7070.
