Mrs. Oldendorf’s Molecular Biology classes went to Nutten Hook Preserve in Stuyvesant and participated in the NYSDEC Day in the Life of the Hudson this week!

School groups from Manhattan all the way up to Troy participate in gathering data for the DEC to get a snapshot of the entire Hudson River Estuary on one specific day. Students caught fish with seine nets, identified them and gathered data on types of fish they caught, as well as data on the chemistry and sediments of the river through coring and other tests.

An electroshock fishing boat came, which brought samples of large fish they caught in the Hudson. On the boat was an AP graduate, Josh Faust, who currently works for NYS Fisheries in Stamford. The students were able to look at the fish and even touch the eel!
