  7. Important Message From the...

APCSD Parents/Guardians,

I am writing to inform you of the arrest of an Averill Park High School student on Monday, December 6, by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Department.

Earlier today, the District was made aware of a threat of violence that was made against the High School. APCSD immediately notified local law enforcement. In conjunction with our School Resource Officer, the District and the Sheriff’s Department quickly launched an investigation into the matter. It was determined that there was no immediate danger, and all students and staff members were safe throughout the day.

Prior to an arrest being made, APHS Principal Heath Quiles notified the high school community of the incident. In his letter, Principal Quiles stated that all threats of violence, even if made in jest, will be taken seriously and they may result in law enforcement becoming involved.

I also want to assure all families that any instance of a threat being made against the Averill Park Central School District will be investigated and taken very seriously. Any student found to be making any threat against the school, its students, or its staff members, will be subject to discipline according to the district’s Code of Conduct. These instances may result in legal consequences with the Sheriff’s Department, as well.

As Principal Quiles stated in his letter to high school families, we encourage parents/guardians to have conversations with their children about the importance of notifying an adult if they hear or see anything concerning. This is the perfect example of the mantra, “if you see something, say something.”

School administrators, counselors, social workers, and other support staff are always available as resources for students and families. Please know that providing a safe school environment remains the District’s top priority.

Sincerely,

Dr. James Franchini
Superintendent of Schools
