QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma;
Experience in dispatching and routing preferred.

DUTIES:

• Dispatch school buses and drivers;
• Assist in the planning and scheduling of bus routes and assigning of drivers;
• Assigns substitute drivers;
• Receives calls and messages by radio and telephone;
• Arranges for pick up and repair of disabled buses;
• Recommends bus route changes;
• Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Receives, transmits and records radio and telephone messages; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for the dispatching of school buses and drivers in a school district. The incumbent assists in the planning and scheduling of bus routes and the assigning of school bus drivers. General supervision is received from a Transportation Supervisor or other designated official. Incumbent in this class must exercise good judgement in responding to emergency situations.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
• Operates radio telephone equipment in the dispatching of drivers and buses on regularly assigned daily routes;
• Assigns substitute bus drivers to replace absent regular drivers;
• Receives calls and messages by radio and telephone and documents personnel involved, location and type of action taken;
• Arranges for the pick-up and repair of disabled buses;
• Schedules bus drivers for field trips, sporting events and special activities;
• Reviews daily tachographs for all bus runs;
• Schedules staff meeting with bus drivers as needed;
• Recommends bus route changes for the consideration of Transportation Supervisor;
• Assists in resolving grievances brought by bus drivers;
• Assists in handling complaints from bus drivers, parents and students in regards to bus routes and schedules and refers to proper authorities;
• Completes and files daily reports on bus route activities;
• Performs a variety of related duties as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of the geographic lay-out of the school district; good knowledge of the operation of school buses; working knowledge of school transportation systems; working knowledge of the operation of dispatching equipment; ability to coordinate the work of others; ability to deal effectively and efficiently with bus drivers, parents and students; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to maintain records and prepare written reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
