  7. COVID Update: 2 New...

On Wednesday, September 15, the Averill Park Central School District was notified that a student at Algonquin Middle School and a student at West Sand Lake Elementary School have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The positive student at AMS was last in the building on September 9 while the WSL student was last in the building on September 10.

Contact tracing has been completed and those who need to quarantine have been notified.

Please note that if anyone in your household is getting tested, any unvaccinated student should await the test results of the person being tested before returning to school. Due to the high degree of transmissibility of the Delta variant, the COVID-19 virus has been spreading throughout households that contain a family member who is positive.

As a reminder, there is no daily health screening for 2021-22. However, students, staff, and families are asked to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19. If you are exhibiting any of the following symptoms, please stay home and contact your healthcare provider:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Diagnostic COVID-19 testing information is available by calling the New York State Department of Health COVID-19 Hotline at (888) 364-3065. COVID-19 vaccination for eligible students is strongly encouraged. Vaccinations are currently available for all individuals 12 and older.
