AFTER SCHOOL – WE ARE WARRIORS SPORTS EVENT – THURS OCT. 6 – 2:30-5:15PM

Coming up on Thursday, October 6, students will have the opportunity to stay after school for the home Modified Football game and Modified Volleyball match. In order to attend, students must register for the event by completing this Google Form that will be emailed to students on Monday morning. There is no cost to attend this event.

On Thursday, October 6, students will stay after with a teacher from 2:40-3:20. Students must make arrangements with a teacher in advance and plan to stay with that teacher for that time. Then from 3:20-4:00 all students report to the Recess Area where snacks and drinks will be for sale by the APO. Students are encouraged to bring a few dollars to buy snacks and drinks. The basketball court will be open and students can enjoy time with friends at the picnic tables. At 4:00 students will report to the football field or the volleyball court where we will cheer AP on to victory. Parents should plan to pick up their child at 5:15 or come out to the field to watch the remainder of the game with their child.

We hope that many of our students will stay after school on Thursday, October 6, and join in on the fun.

NEWS10 – PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE RECORDING – GRADE 8 – THURSDAY

On Thursday, October 6, Grade 8 students will participate in recording the Pledge of Allegiance for News10 ABC’s morning news show. Students who are uncomfortable being included in the filming will not be required to participate. Typically we have encouraged students to wear red, white and blue for this recording, however, this Thursday is also a Blue and Gold Theme Day for the entire building for our sports event in the afternoon. We look forward to families and our community seeing the Pledge on the news in the coming weeks.

AMS MINUTE MEETING

Each year we ask students to answer a series of getting to know you questions through our “AMS Minute Meeting.” On Friday, October 7, students will complete this activity during Morning Meeting. This Minute Meeting will ask students about: their plans to join clubs and activities for the year, if they can identify an adult in the building they can go to for assistance, asks about their favorite and least favorite parts of the school day, and asks for ideas on how to make our school better and finally if they feel connected to other students. Our teachers and counselors will review student answers and they will help us make plans for the rest of the school year.

WARRIOR WEDNESDAY THEME: RELATIONSHIP SKILLS

This competency focuses on developing skills to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups. Relationship skills in school include the ability to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed. These skills help students navigate their interactions with both adults and peers throughout their school day and build skills essential for future careers. This month’s activities focus on developing good communication skills.

Additional information about how Averill Park will be addressing this theme and how you can support your child at home can be found here.

FROM THE LIBRARY

CHROMEBOOK REMINDER:  Please help your child be ready for school by reminding them to charge their Chromebook each night and to be sure to pack it in their backpack for the next school day.  If the battery life falls below 20%, the laptop can go into a deep sleep and die.  It then has to be sent to our Technology Department to be revived. If students are charging their Chromebooks every day, this should ensure that their school day and learning is not interrupted.

The Pleasure Read Book Club returns on Thursday, October 6th!  Students can sign up in the library or email Mrs. Ekstrom if they would like to come.  Anyone is welcome to join us.  Your child can bring any middle school book of their choice and fill out a brief info. sheet on the book.  Book club runs from 2nd dismissal until 3:20.  Students can take the late bus home at 4:15 or get a ride at 3:20.  Please contact Mrs. Ekstrom with any questions: ekstromr@apcsd.org

A very special author visit!

On Monday, October 24, 6th grade students will have a very special, exciting opportunity to see Lauren Tarshis, the author of the extremely popular I Survived series. This author visit has been made possible by Northshire Bookstore.

Four of her books are available for pre-order. Please see this order form:

Poestenkill Public Library News:

Kanopy: We are excited to announce that Poestenkill Library card holders now have access to video streaming services with Kanopy! Head over to https://poestenkilllibrary.kanopy.com/ or download the Kanopy app to register and start streaming today.

Each month registered borrowers will receive 5 play credits with their Poestenkill Library card. Think of a credit as your ticket to the movie; one play credit equals one video you can watch. Play credits will reset on the 1st of each month, and unused credits do not roll over. Titles in the Kanopy Kids collection and Great Courses are unlimited so watching any of those videos will not affect the number of remaining play credits available for the month.

In addition to the Kanopy Kids collection and Great Courses, Kanopy’s general collection includes over 30,000 films from Hollywood blockbusters to early silent-era, short films, educational documentaries, and must-watch series. If you have any questions or need assistance accessing Kanopy, please feel free to give us a call at 518-283-3721 or stop by the library with your device during regular hours. We wish you all happy viewing

Halloween Costume Swap at Poestenkill Public Library:

Think green this Halloween! Save money and reduce waste by participating in the Halloween Costume Swap at Poestenkill Library.

The Library is currently accepting donations of clean, gently used Halloween costumes. Costumes, Halloween masks, and costume accessories in good condition can be donated between now and 10/8. All sizes, infant – adult, are welcome. Donations should be brought to the circulation desk during regular hours. Please, do not leave them on the porch. To ensure the best, hassle-free experience for Swap participants, we also ask that you label all costumes with a description (ie. vampire, size 7/8).

On Wednesday, 10/12, between 4:30 – 6:30, come to the library to pick out a “new to you” costume. All costumes, masks, and accessories will be free and available on a first come, first serve basis. This event is open to everyone. You do not need to donate a costume in order to choose a new one, or vice versa. Please contact the library at 518-283-3721 if you have any questions about the Halloween Costume Swap.
