  7. Earth Science Students Participate...

Students in Ms. Hunter’s Earth Science classes took advantage of the above average temperatures to prepare for the Great Backyard Bird Count, which was held from Feb. 17-20.

After a little practice using the FeederWatch at Cornell Lab of Ornithology and a field guide, students went out with binoculars to observe the birds on the APHS campus. The warmer temperatures revealed a lot of great bird activity.

Some highlights were giant holes from Pileated Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, American Robins, European Starlings, Northern Cardinals, and a hawk not yet identified that perched right above them! The goal is for students to contribute their citizen science observations to Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology.
