  7. Retirements: Kathy Slyer

Kathy Slyer was on maternity leave from her previous role at Doyle Middle School and noticed that APHS was looking for a part-time FACS teacher. “I jumped at the opportunity to come back to my alma mater,” she said. After 13 years of teaching at the high school, she moved to her current position at AMS for another 13 years. Kathy will retire this June.

I love the atmosphere at Algonquin, where our administrators respect us, back us, and expect us to always put forth our best effort,” Kathy said when asked about the best part of being at AMS. “I had the opportunity to spend one year as a teacher in the same building with each of my daughters, although I never taught any of them.  I loved being able to see them as students and get to know their friends even better.  I have made lifelong friends with many of my colleagues, and I will miss working with them on a daily basis.”

In retirement, Kathy has a busy summer planned with three of her daughters each having a major life milestone this summer. “I can’t wait to be a full-time mom, gardener, volunteer, and reader,” she said.
