Alexandra Gaboury won First Place in the Opinion: Grades 7-9 category of the Daily Gazette’s annual The Student Gazette competition.

This is the 21st year the competition has taken place with the goal of stimulating creativity and an interest in journalism in students.

The contest has three divisions and is split into grade levels of 3-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Winners receive recognition in print as well as monetary awards in the amount of $25, $50 and $100 for third, second and first place, respectively.

“It’s a great pleasure to welcome all of the winners and their loved ones to the awards ceremony,” Daily Gazette Editor Miles Reed said in a statement. “It’s such a positive day. These student journalists represent the best of the community.”

Alexandra’s winning entry is titled “Behold the wonderful library – a place of learning, creation and comfort.” It can be read here.
