West Sand Lake Elementary first grade students from Mrs. Zalucky’s classroom, and their families, created holiday care packages to send to Afghanistan to support a former Averill Park CSD graduate, Matt Schumaker, class of 2017.
Matt is an airborne infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division with a rank of specialist based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He is doing a year-long deployment in Afghanistan.
Our character education word of the month for December is “caring” and thanks to the generosity of the families in Mrs. Z’s homeroom, six boxes were able to be sent out to Matt and other soldiers in his troop! Besides snacks, toiletries and cards, the students learned how an act of kindness can be spread across thousands of miles.
