Educational Improvement Teams

The Averill Park School District, in compliance with the New York State Compact for Learning, has developed a plan for "Shared Decision Making" and "School-Based Planning." School-Based Planning and Shared Decision Making is a process for a meaningful partnership of students, teachers, parents, and building principals at each school in the district, designed to involve those responsible for implementing decisions in actually making those decisions.

The focus of this process is on education; the goal is to improve student educational achievement. As outlined in the plan, a committee has been formed at each school building in the district. These groups have been charged with improving the educational program in each school and are called the Educational Improvement Team, or EIT. The EIT meets once monthly during the school year and does not address issues concerning buses, maintenance, cafeteria, playground, or other administrative areas.

School Census

To help the district project future class sizes, arrange transportation routes and allocate resources to our neighborhood schools, we ask that parents and guardians complete the District Student Census Form (.pdf) so that we can identify all school-age children and preschool-age children living within the district. If you know of someone moving into the district with preschool-aged children, please encourage them to contact Julie Ernest, Central Registrar at 674-7050 x 7201.

 Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are an important element in reporting pupil progress to parents. At the elementary level, conferences are scheduled in November and in April. All parents are asked to attend the parent-teacher conference in November; the April conference is optional. However, we recommend that parents take advantage of this scheduled time to meet with their child's teacher.

In addition to the conferences scheduled in the elementary schools, conferences are encouraged at other grade levels. As a parent, you may initiate a conference by calling your child's school and making an appointment with the teacher, counselor, or principal. If you cannot attend during the scheduled time, please notify the school in sufficient time so that another conference time can be arranged. Every effort will be made to schedule your conference at a mutually convenient time.

Working Papers

Students between the ages of 12 and 17 who plan to work must have working papers. Application forms are available at AverillParkHigh School. For additional information, you may call 674-7025.
